National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE)

The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) collects information annually from samples of first-year and senior students about the nature and quality of their undergraduate experience. Since its inception, more than 1,300 baccalaureate-granting colleges and universities in the US and Canada have used the instrument to measure the extent to which students engage in effective educational practices that are empirically linked with learning, personal development, and other desired outcomes such as student satisfaction, persistence, and graduation.

This report was created to focus our discussions about the importance of student engagement and to guide institutional improvement efforts. The report keys off of the National Survey of Student Engagement's five "benchmarks" of effective educational practice: (1) Level of academic challenge, (2) Active and collaborative learning, (3) Student-faculty interaction, (4) Enriching educational experiences, and (5) Supportive campus environment. For each benchmark, the results for Catholic University freshmen and seniors are compared with comparable results for our Carnegie peers, and all 2007 NSSE institutions. In order to provide a general as well as a nuanced view of how our students’ perceptions match those of other institutions, results are displayed in two ways: 1) in terms of the overall benchmark score, and 2) in terms of the individual mean scores that compose each benchmark.

The overall response rate for Catholic University freshmen and seniors was thirty percent, with twenty-nine percent of freshmen responding and thirty-three percent of seniors responding.
